Spatial Concepts

Concepts related to the space around us, or spatial concepts, are prerequisites for any child in the journey of learning math. These concepts are also called pre-math concepts, which basically define the relationship between us and the space around us that is our surroundings. One of our aims as a teacher or parent is to provide a helping hand to our children in understanding the world around them.

Need to learn spatial concepts :

Learning is based on the words we use to describe relationships in space, so they are vitally important. As kids develop oratory skills, premath concepts play a vital role in expressing their ideas to the people around them. Premath concepts help children develop early mathematics skills, boost their vocabulary, and build their foundation for learning.

Activities

Teaching basic spatial concepts by hands – on activities :

Body Parts :

The use of body parts can be a great way to teach kids spatial concepts. For example : up / down, left / right, can be taught by moving hands in that direction. Open / close can be taught by opening or closing the eyes or fist.

Toy Kingdom :

It is possible to demonstrate different spatial concepts by changing the position of your child’s favorite toy. In this way, the child can understand the concepts better. For example : a toy and blocks can be used to show in / out, up / down, big / small, one / many, more / less, etc.

Paper Toy Craft :

This is a fun activity to engage little ones while teaching concepts related to the space around us. As kids love to craft with paper, this activity will benefit their understanding of the topic.

This activity can be performed following these steps :

  1. Make a paper creature.
  2. Help kids to visualize various spatial concepts by using the paper creature.
