Learning all arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of natural numbers is a must for gaining proficiency in mathematics. Similarly, we perform all operations on fractions and operations on integers. In the same vein, another important topic for children to learn at the age of 9 to 11 is operations with decimals.

Operations on decimals :
Align the decimal points of the provided numbers before adding any decimal numbers. We place decimal after the number if a decimal point is not present (i.e., full numbers).
Line up the decimal point of all the numbers and subtract the values, just as you would when adding decimal numbers. Use zero as a placeholder for subtraction.
Multiply the provided values as though they were integers without a decimal point. Find the product and count the decimal place in the numbers given. The count indicates the correct position of the decimal in the product.
There can be 3 different kinds of problems in dividing decimals :
Dividing decimals by whole numbers :
- This is simple like the division of whole numbers as the divisor is the whole number only, and the dividend has a decimal. The placing of the decimal in the quotient should be exactly over the decimal point of the dividend.
Division of a decimal number by another decimal number :
- Simply change the decimal point such that the decimal number becomes a whole number to split the decimal numbers. Then perform the division operation in a similar way as the division of integers.
Division of decimals by 10, 100, and 1000 :
- This one is the simplest and most fun division where only the position of the decimal shifts to the left as per the number of zeroes in the divisor.
