Angles
Learning about angles is important, as they form the base of Geometry. Angles can be found everywhere, from objects to carpentry sketches and fashion design.
Let us discover ways to teach angles to children.
What is an angle?
- An angle is formed when two lines meet at a common point.
- An angle is a measure of turn from one point to another.
- There are many angles around us.
- We make an angle with the ground when we throw anything in the air. The larger the angle, the higher your throw will be.
How to measure an angle?
We measure an angle using a protractor.
The unit of measurement of an angle is degree – °
Steps:
- Keep the centre point of the protractor on the vertex of the angle where the lines meet.
- Align the bottom line of the protractor with the base of the angle.
- Start reading the numbers from right to left.
- To find the degrees of angle, start reading from 0 to the point where the second line of the angle meets the protractor.
- Note down the final answer. Types of angles:
Types of angles:
Angles that are less than 90° are called Acute angles.
Angles that are greater than 90° and less than 180° are called Obtuse angles.
An angle that measures exactly 90° is called a Right angle.
Angles that measure 180° are called straight angles.
Different ways of teaching:
Teaching through stories:
Teaching through activities:
- Angles hunt: The first step of making students learn angles is to show them that angles are all around us. This game will be fun as students will find all the angles they spot around them. EG: Windows, door, books etc. Let them go crazy with their imaginations.
- Tape the angles: Simply tape up your board/tables using masking tape to create intersecting lines and loads of angles to explore! On a smaller scale, students could create their own on paper. These can be used for classifying, estimating and measuring.
- Angles Language: Let students write their names in capital letters. Now make them measure angles in the letters.
