The Total Books

Topic: 2 digit multiplication

Triho and Cirha like reading. They often visit Samper Town’s library and have a good reading time.

“Hello, children. So nice to see you today”, says Madam Word who is Uncle Math’s friend. She is responsible for managing the library. “Hello, Madam Word”, greet the kids together.

Soon, Triho and Cirha pick their respective books and start reading.

Suddenly they hear a weird noise. “What could it mean?” they think. Immediately, they rush to find out.

“Madam Word!” screams Cirha. They are surprised to find Atrihos in the library attacking Madam Word. “We want these best mathematics books! We will use its steps and help our boss design deadly gadgets. Haha! Samper town will be over. Haha”, say Atrihos.

“No! They can’t take the books with them. Please do something Triho and Cirha”, requests Madam Word.

“I know how to deal with them”, says confident Triho. Cirha is ready to attack as well.

Bam! Boom! Crash! Cirha and Triho fight the Atrihos bravely. Unable to fight and wanting to save their lives, they run away. Haha! Atrihos are really good at running. Isn’t it?

“Pheww! You are safe Madam Word. Such a relief”, says Cirha. “But let me quickly check if we have all the books or not?” says Madam Word. “There are 12 bookshelves and each shelf had 15 books. So how books in total?” she asks.

“That’s a lot of books. But how many books exactly?” says Cirha. Triho is confused too. What will they do now? Will they call Uncle Math?

“Haha! I am here already”, says Uncle Math. “Mr Messenger informed me about the attack and I rushed here to see if Madam Word was fine. I am glad you both were here. Good job kids”, he says.

“Multiplying 12 and 15 will give us the count of total books”, says Unce Math. “But how? I only know to multiply single-digit numbers”, says Cirha. “No fear when I am here”, says Uncle Math and grabs a board.

“Whenever we multiply two-digit numbers, there are certain steps that we follow. Let us learn the steps one by one”, says Uncle Math.

Step 1: Write the numbers one below the other as per their place values.

Step 2: First, multiply the digit in ones place of the bottom number with all the digits of the top number.

“So we will multiply 5 with 2 first. The result is 10. As ones place can only have one digit, we will write 0 here and carry 1 to the tens place. Now we will multiply 5 with 1 and add the carry 1. The result is 6.  Finally, 12 x 5 is 60”, explains Uncle Math.

Step 3: Now multiply the digit in tens place of the bottom number with all the digits of the top number. But remember, we will write the multiplication in a new row.

“We will multiply 1 with 12 following a similar process. The result is 12. But we need to leave a place and write 12 as shown. This is because we are multiplying with digits in the tens place”, says Uncle Math.

Step 4: Finally, add all the numbers as per their place values and write the final answer.

“So, the final answer is 180. Am I right?” says Triho. Absolutely. There were 180 books in the library.

Madam Word is elated. She quickly counts if she has all the 180 books. “Woohoo! Atrihos could not take even a single book from the library. This is a relief. Thanks a lot, Cirha and Triho. Because of your bravery, we could save the town again. You deserve a reward”, she praises. Uncle math agrees with her.

Triho and Cirha are glad that they could be of some help. Madam Word gives them many books to practice multiplication. Both the kids are elated. Uncle Math leaves. Madam Social gets back to her desk. Indeed a fruitful day it was.

We Learnt That…
