Gift And The New Year Celebrations
Topic: Add Without Carry Over
New Year’s Eve is around the corner. Everybody in the Samper town is happy and joyful.
“Oh no! Run everybody. The evil robots are here”, screams one of the citizens. Everybody panics.
The kids who were playing nearby hear the screams. “Surely, the evil robots are again troubling people”, says Cirha. Triho and Squarho rush to teach them a good lesson. Cirho and Cirha decide to help the people.
Bam! Boom! Crash! The kids fight the evil robots. The robots run to save themselves. Cirha and Cirho help people get back to their homes safely.
“They spoiled our new year! Why are they so bad?” says disappointed Cirho. Due to the evil robots and their troubles, Samper Town is full of sorrow and grief. “We should do something to make the citizens happy again”, says Triho.
“Let us celebrate New Year differently this time. How about a secret gift mission? To spread happiness all over the city, we could give some gifts to the citizens secretly. I am sure they will be happy again”, suggest Cirha. Everybody loves her idea.
Together, they buy some gifts from the store and get them packed in beautiful gift boxes.
“Wow! They look so amazing. I can’t wait to see the surprised look on the faces of people”, says Cirho. “We should also invite Uncle Math”, suggests Squarho.
Uncle Math is proud of their idea of the gift mission and the intention behind it. “So, how many gifts will we be distributing in total?” he asks. “There are 43 blue boxes and 54 red boxes”, answers Triho. “But how many altogether?” reiterates Uncle Math. The kids are clueless.
Cirha quickly starts grouping the gift boxes in tens and ones. “What are you doing?” questions Cirho. “ I am grouping them so that we can easily count them”, she says. Having understood her reason, others help her too.
“10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97. Phew! That was really time taking. Anyways, there are 97 boxes in total”, answers Cirha. She is right. Uncle Math is proud of her. He says, “Cirha, your method to find the total is great. But if I tell you, is there a quicker way than that?” All the kids want to learn this quick method.
Taking something out of his pocket, Uncle Math says, “This digital board like gadget is Mr Place Value. It will help us understand this quick method. But before that, what should we do to find the total objects?” questions, Uncle Math. “We should add all of them”, answers Triho.
“Correct! We will first enter the numbers we want to add into Mr Place Value”, says Uncle Math while entering the numbers 13 and 24. Soon after the numbers are input, the gadget displays the number as a table with columns ‘Tens’ and ‘Ones’. The kids are amazed.
“How many tens and ones are there in 13?” questions Uncle Math. “One ten and 3 ones”, answers Squarho. “And how many tens and ones in 23?” asks Uncle Math. “ 2 tens and 3 ones”, answers Triho. “Oh! That is why Mr Place Value’s table has Tens and Ones columns”, says Triho making the connections.
“Correct! Now let us add all the ones from the right side. So 4+3 is equal to..”
“7″, says Cirho. Uncle Math smiles. “Now let us add all the tens on the left side. So 1+2= 3. Therefore we have 37 boxes in total”, answers Uncle Math. “ Correct Answer!” announces Peter.
Seeing her answer match with Mr Place Value, Cirha starts jumping with joy. ”Mr Place Value’s method is so quick Uncle Math. We did not even have to group the objects physically and find the total. Just enter the numbers. Add the ones first then tens. Voila! We have the answer”, she says excitedly.
“Exactly. Using Mr Place Value we can add any number now”, says Triho. The kids are delighted. They try their hands at adding some big numbers.
“Let us go now! We are getting late”, says Uncle Math. They quickly grab the gifts and leave.
It is all dark. The kids and Uncle Math quietly walk and place their 37 gifts outside the houses of Samper Town.
The next morning, the citizens are surprised to see such beautiful gifts outside their houses. They are elated. “Our mission to spread happiness all over Samper Town is accomplished now!” says Cirha. The kids are overjoyed too.
We Learnt That…
- We can add numbers using counting in groups too. This method works well with smaller numbers. But it is time taking too.
- To add numbers faster, we can use the place value table.
- When adding two-digit numbers using a place value table,
- Add the ones first
- Add the tens later
- The result is the answer.
- The well being of the community depends on us. We should take the initiatives to maintain it.
- What was my idea to celebrate New year differently?
- How did I find out the total gift boxes initially?
- How did Mr Place Value help in finding the total number of gift boxes?
- We took the initiative to spread happiness in times of sorrow. Were we right? Why or why not?
- Have you taken such initiatives to make people happy again? Explain.
