Math Story : Addition Without Carry Over
Gift And The New Year Celebrations
Narrator : New Year’s Eve is around the corner. Everybody in the Samper town is happy and joyful.
Narrator : Oh no! All the citizens of Samper town are scared and start running as the evil robots enter the town.
[The kids who were playing nearby heard the screams.]
Cirha : Surely, the evil robots are again troubling people.
Narrator : Triho and Squarho rush to teach them a good lesson. Cirho and Cirha decide to help the people.
Narrator : “Bam! Boom! Crash!” The kids fight the evil robots. The robots run to save themselves. Cirha and Cirho help people get
back to their homes safely.
Cirho : They spoiled our New Year! Why are they so bad?
Narrator : Due to the evil robots and their troubles, Samper town is full of sorrow and grief.
Triho: We should do something to make the citizens happy again.
Cirha : Let us celebrate the New Year differently this time. How about a secret gift mission? To spread happiness all over the city, we could give some gifts to the citizens secretly. I am sure they will be happy again.
[Everybody loves her idea.]
Narrator : Together, they buy some gifts from the store and get them packed in beautiful gift boxes.
Cirho : Wow! They look so amazing. I can’t wait to see the surprised look on the faces of people.
Squarho : We should also invite Uncle Math.
Uncle Math : It’s a great idea! I am really proud of you all. So, how many gifts will we be distributing in total?
Triho : There are 43 blue boxes and 54 red boxes.
Uncle Math : How many altogether?
[The kids are clueless.]
[Cirha quickly starts grouping the gift boxes into tens and ones.]
Cirho : What are you doing?
Cirha : I am grouping them so that we can easily count them.
Narrator : Having understood her reason, others help her too.
Cirha : 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, and 97. Phew! That was really tedious. Anyway, there are 97 boxes in total.
Uncle Math : Correct! Cirha, your method to find the total is good but time consuming. Do you want to know a quicker method to calculate?
Cirha, Cirho, Triho and Squarho : Yes, Uncle Math. We all want to learn this quick method.
[Uncle Math quickly takes out a gadget and says…]
Uncle Math : This digital board-like gadget is Mr Place Value. It will help us learn this quick method. What should we do to find the total number of objects?
Triho : We should use addition.
Uncle Math : Correct! We will first enter the numbers we want to add into Mr Place Value.
Uncle Math : How many tens and ones are there in 54?
Squarho : 5 tens and 4 ones.
Uncle Math : How many tens and ones are there in 43?
Triho : 4 tens and 3 ones.
Triho : Oh! That is why Mr Place Value has tens and ones columns.
Uncle Math : Correct! Now add all of the ones on the right side. So, 4 + 3 is equal to…
Cirho : 7.
Uncle Math : Now let us add all the tens on the left side. So 5 + 4 = 9. Therefore, we have 97 boxes in total.
Mr Place Value : Correct Answer!
[Seeing her answer match with Mr Place Value, Cirha starts jumping out of joy.]
Cirha : Mr Place Value’s method is so quick, Uncle Math. We did not even have to group the objects physically and find the total. Just enter the numbers. Add the ones first, then the tens. Voila! We have the sum which is the result of addition.
Triho : Exactly. Using Mr Place Value, we can add any number now.
Narrator : The kids are delighted. They try their hands at adding some more numbers.
Uncle Math : Let us go now! We are getting late.
Narrator : They quickly grab the gifts and leave. It is all dark. The kids and Uncle Math quietly walk and place their 97 gifts outside the houses of Samper town.
We Learnt That…
- We can add numbers using counting in groups too. This method works well with smaller numbers. But it is time taking too.
- To add numbers faster, we can use the place value table.
- When adding two-digit numbers using a place value table,
- Add the ones first
- Add the tens later
- The result is the answer.
- The well being of the community depends on us. We should take the initiatives to maintain it.
- What was my idea to celebrate New year differently?
- How did I find out the total gift boxes initially?
- How did Mr Place Value help in finding the total number of gift boxes?
- We took the initiative to spread happiness in times of sorrow. Were we right? Why or why not?
- Have you taken such initiatives to make people happy again? Explain.
