Math Story : Different Views Of 3D Shapes
All About The Views
“We are running out of money! We will have to arrange it somehow if we want to function smoothly and keep inventing gadgets”, says Uncle Science on a call to Uncle Math. Both of them are worried.
Uncle Math discusses the same with kids. Seeing him so worried, Cirha hands over her piggy bank and says, “I know this is a very small amount, but take this”. It takes a big heart to help anyone. But Uncle Math denies it and says, “I am proud of you and your kindness. But, this is not the solution. We need to think about a bigger amount here”.
The next day something strange happens. Uncle Math receives a voice message from Madam Social. She is Uncle Math’s teacher friend. “A hidden treasure of gold coins has been predicted to be found in a large desert. I think this might help us”, reads the voice message. Uncle Math is elated.
“Time for adventure! Together we will find the treasure and help the galaxy”, he says and they leave for the mysterious desert without worrying about their own safety.
As they land in the desert, they feel extremely hot. All they spot is sand, sand dunes and dry trees. “It will be difficult for us to roll on our wheels here due to the sand. I will give you my superpower rocket to easily move around here”, suggests Uncle Math and gives them the superpower.
As they move forward, suddenly a strong breeze starts blowing that forms a big sand monster. It is so big that it looks like a wall that is blocking the way. “Welcome to my land! Treasure treasure on the wall. A shape with three different views has it all. Find it soon, before the sand in this glass completely falls. Hahaha!” says the sand monster. Everybody is scared and puzzled.
Soon the sand monster vanishes in the air. But the sand in the glass has started to fall slowly. “We need to hurry!” says Cirha. Immediately they rush.
As they move ahead, they spot a huge building. “Look it has a triangle”, says Cirho when he sees the building from the front. “No it has a square”, says Squarho when he sees it from the top. “No it has a triangle”, says Cirha as she sees it from the side. Soon they start quarrelling.
“Stop it! This is not the right time to fight”, says Triho. The sand in the glass continues to fall. “All of you are right here. This is a pyramid. Cirho is viewing it from the front. Cirha is viewing from the side and Squarho is viewing from the top. Because a pyramid is a 3D shape, it has three different views depending upon the directions you see it from”, explains Uncle Math.
“Ohh! Alright”, says Cirho making connections. “Let us rush to find treasure here”, suggests Squarho. “Wait! The sand monster said: Treasure treasure on the wall. A shape with three different views has it all. That means he was indicating at these views”, says Triho.
“Exactly! But this building has two triangles and one square. This can’t have treasure”, says Cirha. Uncle Math agrees and they
decide to move ahead without wasting more time.
Soon, a new building appears. Look at it carefully. Can you identify its top, side, and front view? Do you think the treasure is in here?
“This building looks like a square from its top, front and side view. It is a cube”, says Squarho. “That means the treasure is not here. Let’s move ahead”, says Triho.
The next building appears. Look at it carefully. Can you identify its top, side, and front view? Do you think the treasure is in here?
“Yes, it is a cylinder. It looks like a rectangle from the side and front view. It looks like a circle from the top view. Since it does not have three different views, the treasure is not here”, says Cirho. Everybody rushes to move ahead. Very little time is left now.
“Another building!” says Cirho. It looks like a house. Hurry up and identify its top, side, and front view. Do you think the treasure is in here?
“From the front, the house looks like a pentagon”, says Triho. “From the side, it looks like a bigger and thicker T”, says Cirha. “From the top, it looks like a square”, says Squarho.
Hurrah! These are three different views. That means the treasure is in here. Everybody is happy. As they get close to the house, it automatically opens its door and lets them in.
“Faster! Faster! Only a few seconds left”, says Triho looking at the sand glass. “Look there! The treasure box!” says Uncle Math as he spots some huge boxes. They move even faster now.
“Wow! So much gold!” exclaims Cirho. The kids are astonished to see so much treasure. But the sand in the glass continues to fall. Will they be able to get back home with the treasure?
Together they quickly grab the treasure box and start carrying it out. They rush toward the spacecraft to reach it as fast as possible. Noticing the sand in the glass, Cirha gets scared and says, “We will get stuck here, come on let’s move even faster”.
Voila! They successfully get the treasure out and board their spacecraft to leave. Good days are coming. It’s time for celebration.
Good teamwork, great motive, big treasure, and a challenge! Indeed it was an adventurous trip.
We Learnt That…
- A 3D shape has 3 different views: Top view, front view and side view.
- When we view a 3D shape from the top, we get the top view.
- When we view a 3D shape from the side, we get the side view.
- When we view a 3D shape from the front, we get the front view.
- It takes a big heart to help anyone.
Let’s Discuss!
- Why was Uncle Math worried?
- Where did we go today?
- What did the sand monster say?
- How did we find the treasure?
- What are the different views of a 3D shape? Explain with an example.
