Area and perimeter is the crucial topic to understand at the age of 9 to 11 years. Imagine a brick in front of you. Have you ever noticed its length is more compared to its breadth? It’s a rectangle! Totally different from a square which has all equal sides. Breadth is also referred to as width.
This teaching guide helps its readers to understand the concept of the area and perimeter of a rectangle in a simpler way by using innovative teaching aids like animated comic videos of the concept, posters, worksheets, and activities.
A Rectangle :
A rectangle is a special type of quadrilateral, which is a 2D shape with four sides and four vertices. All four angles of a rectangle are right angles, meaning they are equal to 90 degrees. The opposite sides of a rectangle are equal and parallel to each other.
Perimeter of a rectangle :
In simple terms, the perimeter of a shape is the total distance around its boundaries or sides. To find the perimeter of a rectangle, we add the lengths of all its sides. Since opposite sides of a rectangle are equal, we can simplify the formula for the perimeter. It will be twice the width of the rectangle plus twice the length of the rectangle.
We can represent the perimeter of a rectangle as “P = 2(l + b),” where “l” is the length and “b” is the breadth. We measure the perimeter in units like meters, centimeters, inches, or feet.
Area of a rectangle :
- By counting the unit squares covered by the rectangle :
To calculate the area of a two-dimensional shape, we can break it down into smaller squares. These squares are called unit squares, and each one takes up one square unit of space.
By counting the total number of unit squares in the shape, we can determine its area. The area of a shape is measured using square units. In the case of a rectangle, we can find its area by using unit squares.
Here, the area of the rectangle PQRS = 8 square units.
- By using the formula :
To calculate the area of a rectangle, we need to multiply its length and width (breadth). The formula for the area of a rectangle is
Area = length × breadth
Area = l × b
So, to find the area, we multiply the length of the rectangle by its breadth.
Area = l x b
Here, in the figure l = 4 units and b = 2 units so,
Area = l x b
Area = 4 x 2 = 8 square units.
Remember, if you want to measure how much space is inside a shape like a room, you need to find its area. But if you want to know the distance around a shape like a fence, you need to find its perimeter. Understanding these concepts will help you work with rectangles more effectively.

Pick me up!
This is a simple activity to help children practise areas and perimeters in an easy way. The activity can be carried out in the following steps :
- Instruct kids to grab 2 rectangular objects, like a book and a pencil box.
- Let them measure the length and breadth of both rectangular objects using a measuring tape or ruler and record them.
- Next, determine the area and perimeter of these objects by using the formula :
- Area = l x b
- Perimeter = 2 (l + b)
