When something whole is divided into parts, a decimal is obtained.

• A decimal number is expressed in two parts : the whole number and the fractional part, separated by a dot or decimal.
• Decimals stand in between 2 values, for example, 5.6 lies between 5 and 6.

A given fraction can be converted to decimal by the following two methods :

1. Long Division method.
2. Converting the denominator to the power of 10.

1. Long Division method

• Divide the numerator by the denominator.
• In this case, the denominator (divisor) will be greater than the numerator (dividend).

For example :

• In this method, the denominator of the given fraction is converted to the power of 10, like 10, 100, 100, and so on.
• A suitable number is thought to be one that can be multiplied by both the numerator and denominator so that the denominator comes in the form of a power of 10.

For example : 

Fractions with a denominator of 10 or 100 can be expressed in decimals by simply putting a decimal in the numerator according to the number of 0s in the denominator.

For example : 

• If the denominator has 10, put a decimal after one place in the numerator.
• If the denominator has 100, put a decimal after two places in the numerator.

We are aware that the decimal places indicate tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on. When converting from decimal to fraction, decimal numbers should therefore be written down in the expanded form and the values should be simplified. 

For example, 0.25 

The expanded form of 0.25 is 25 x (1/100) = 25/100 = 1/4.
