Properties Of Addition
Students always find it hard to understand the purpose of studying the properties of different operations. The purpose of properties is to help us calculate the result quickly. Basically, properties act like shortcuts to perform the operations.
There are 3 properties of addition:
1. Additive identity property
2. Commutative property of addition
3. Associative property of addition
Let’s understand them one by one.
Additive identity property:
Whenever we add zero to a number, the result is the number itself. This is called the Additive identity Property of addition. This means that adding 0 to a number does not change the value of the number and keeps the identity of the number the same.
Eg: 5 + 0 = 5
Commutative property of addition:
When adding, the numbers can be swapped. The result will still be the same. This is called commutative property or the order property of addition.
Eg: 4 + 3 = 7 or 3 + 4 = 7
Associative property of addition:
The associative property of addition says that when we add 3 or more numbers, we can group them in order. The result would not change.
Eg: 3 + (2 + 4) = 9
(3 + 2) + 4 = 9
