Numbers and counting are the most basic mathematical concept. Thus learning them in a good way becomes significant to set a strong foundational base in the subject. Introducing numbers at an early stage will set up young learners with a great start in their journey in Math. But number identification is hard for young learners as some numbers look similar. For example, many children have trouble telling the difference between 6 & 9 and 1 & 7.
Forward and backward counting:
When we count forward we add 1 more to the number. When we count backwards, we remove one from the numbers. While we count forward, the numbers increase and when we count backwards, the numbers decrease.
Eg: Forward counting from 1 looks like 1,2,3,4,5,6 and so on.
Backwards counting from 10 looks like 10,9,8,7 and so on.

a) Hopscotch: This is one of the oldest yet most favourite games among kids. Make kids play this game and have fun. This game is also perfect to introduce forward and backwards counting for up to 10.
b) Numbers hunt: Hide numbers around the house or the play area. Call out a number and make kids find it. This will not only help the kids master number identification but also enjoy learning.
c) Dominoes: Dominoes are a wonderful math tool for building number recognition, number matching, and counting skills in early learners. One can use dominoes in various forms to build these skills and make learning for kids.
d) Snake & Ladder: Who doesn’t like snake & ladder. Use this game to teach numbers upto 100 and also have a great family time.
e) Ludo: Ludo is an effective tool to develop numeracy skills and spatial understanding. It not only can be used to build concepts of counting but also colours, and shapes. Early learners also develop creative ways of solving problems while playing this.

c) Dialling numbers/ Phone a friend: Children love to imitate their elders. They also enjoy trying things that only adults are allowed to do. Why not take this imitation game to next level. Phone a friend is a make-believe game, students will have to fake dial a friend of theirs following the numbers that you read out loud. Later you can indulge in a conversation where the child and you actually talk like friends.
